Neurofeedback FAQs

Welcome to our Neurofeedback FAQ sheet. These Q&A aim to provide comprehensive information about neurofeedback, its benefits, process, and scientific backing. If you have any questions that aren’t addressed here, please don’t hesitate to ask our practitioner.
Remember, while Neurofeedback can be a powerful tool for brain health and performance, individual experiences may vary. We’re here to answer any additional questions you may have during your journey with Neurofeedback.
A: Neurofeedback is an advanced, non-invasive brain training technique that helps optimize brain function. It works by providing real-time feedback to your brain about its own activity, allowing it to self-regulate and reorganize for improved performance.
A: During a session, sensors are placed on your scalp to monitor your brain's electrical activity. Sophisticated software analyzes your brain's EEG activity in real-time, identifying patterns that could benefit from optimization. When the system detects these changes, it provides immediate feedback to your brain, typically through brief, subtle interruptions in the music you're listening to. This feedback triggers your brain's natural neuroplasticity—its ability to adapt and improve its own functioning. Over a series of sessions, this self-optimization process can lead to improvements in cognition, mood, behavior, and overall well-being.
A: While individual needs and results vary, most people see noticeable improvements within 8-20 sessions. Some may require 20 or more sessions for long-term results. Regular sessions allow your brain to learn and adapt more effectively.
A: It is safe and effective to train up to twice daily, but 2 to 3 sessions per week are generally sufficient for most. It's ideal to allow the brain 1 to 2 days to integrate changes.

A: Many people report feeling calmer, less reactive, and more centered in their daily lives. Benefits can include:

  • Performance Enhancement: Supports cognitive function and mental clarity for peak performers in various fields, including sports.
  • Cognitive Wellness: Assists with focus, mental acuity challenges, concentration, problem-solving, pattern recognition, improved learning capacity, cognitive performance, and overall brain resiliency.
  • Stress Resilience: Promotes relaxation and better sleep patterns.
  • Emotional Balance: Supports emotional regulation and attention for individuals of all ages.
  • Personal Growth: Complements personal development and lifestyle improvement efforts.
  • Cognitive Wellness for Seniors: Supports mental vitality and cognitive health as we age.

A: The goal of Neurofeedback is to help your brain learn new, more efficient patterns of functioning. With sufficient training, these changes can become long-lasting, continuing even after you've stopped regular sessions. However, some individuals may benefit from occasional "tune-up" sessions.

A: Yes, Neurofeedback is considered very safe. It's non-invasive and doesn't introduce anything new to your system—it simply provides information to your brain. With millions of hours of use globally, no significant adverse effects have been reported.

A: NeurOptimal is registered with the FDA as a general wellness device. It is not used to treat or cure any medical conditions. Rather, it is used to help the brain become more resilient and work at its most optimal level.

A: Our practitioner, Jessica Shannon, LCSW, CMNCS, C-DBT, has undergone extensive training in neurofeedback techniques and is committed to ongoing professional development in the field to maintain certification.

A: Insurance generally does not cover Neurofeedback services. Some may be able to use HSA or FSA, but it is encouraged that you check with your insurance carrier.

A: Unlike some methods that attempt to force specific brain wave patterns, our Neurofeedback system uses a non-linear, dynamical approach. It allows your brain to find its own optimal state rather than pushing it in a predetermined direction.
A: During a typical 33-minute session, you'll sit comfortably and listen to music through headphones. The music will briefly pause or skip at times, providing your brain with subtle feedback. This process is completely passive—you don't need to consciously try to change anything; your brain does the work automatically.
A: No special preparation is needed. Just come as you are, ready to relax. It's helpful to be well-hydrated, well-rested, and to avoid excessive caffeine before your session. It is recommended to bring your own headphones to use for your visit.
A: Neurofeedback can benefit a wide range of people, from children to seniors of all ages. It's particularly helpful for individuals looking to improve cognitive performance, manage stress, enhance focus and concentration, regulate emotions, and/or optimize overall brain function. However, it's important to consult with your practitioner to determine if neurofeedback is appropriate for your specific needs.
A: Some people report positive changes after just a few sessions, while for others it may take longer. We provide tracking tools to help you monitor your progress over time. Often, clients show some improvement within 8 to 10 sessions, but everyone's experiences are different. Some clients may not see significant, long-lasting benefits until they reach 20 to 30 visits.

A: To quantify the benefits and effectiveness of Neurofeedback, we provide clients with tracking cards to monitor their progress. These cards capture self-reported data on various aspects, such as focus, concentration, stress levels, and overall well-being.

A: Most people experience no side effects. Occasionally, some individuals might feel temporarily fatigued after a session or experience a headache, due to the brain rewiring itself. Every brain is different, and everyone will have different responses to brain and emotional changes. As training continues, these side effects should subside completely.

A: Yes, Neurofeedback has a strong foundation in scientific research, with over 4,000 peer-reviewed studies published in scientific journals. Studies have shown that Neurofeedback can support cognitive performance, emotional regulation, and overall well-being. However, it's important to note that while the overall body of evidence supports neurofeedback's efficacy, results can vary depending on the specific condition and individual.

A: Yes, Neurofeedback complements other therapies well, including traditional talk therapies, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), nutritional-based therapy, EMDR, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), substance abuse treatment, photobiomodulation, mindfulness practices, and more. However, it's best to consult with your provider(s) about the treatment protocol that best addresses your specific needs.

Photobiomodulation FAQs

A: The recommended usage is typically once every other day, not exceeding once per day. For intensive needs, usage may increase to 6 times per week.
A: PBM is generally considered safe and non-invasive, but it's not recommended for pregnant individuals (due to lack of research), those with epilepsy or seizures, or those with potential brain bleeds. Always consult a healthcare provider before starting treatment.
A: Results vary by individual, with some seeing improvements in as little as 4 weeks, while others may take 6-12 weeks, depending on usage frequency and intensity of concerns.
A: The Neuro Duo photobiomodulation device is FDA-registered as a wellness device but is not approved to treat or cure medical conditions.
A: Sessions typically last up to 20 minutes, with a recommendation to gradually increase duration when using gamma frequencies.
A: Most users do not experience any side effects. If side effects occur, they are generally mild, with some users experiencing temporary overstimulation, headaches, or fatigue, particularly with gamma frequencies.
